The public health fund pays less for teeth than you might think.

Statutory health insurance (ÖGK, SVS, BVAEB) only covers basic treatment with a contracted dentist. For bills from private dentists and for Wahlleistungen (optional extra services), the fund pays nothing or very little. Professional dental hygiene is almost never covered. For fixed prosthetics — crowns, bridges, implants — there is no reimbursement or only a minimal one, and with removable dentures you usually still pay a share yourself. Braces for children are covered only under certain conditions (depending on the severity of the misalignment, the type and material of the braces and the choice of orthodontist) — and often only in part.

So a single crown or implant can easily turn into a bill of several thousand euros. Dental insurance takes on most of these costs.

Health comes before everything.

Plans

Dental insurance: three options. One conversation.

We recommend the plan that fits your life — not the most expensive one.

Dental treatment (Zahnerhalt)

from24€/month

  • Included: Fillings and Inlays
  • Included: Root canal and periodontal treatment
  • Included: Night guards for teeth grinding (Knirscherschienen)
  • Included: Professional hygiene up to 100%, up to 265 €/year
  • Included: Up to 90% of the bill
  • Included: No waiting period for adults

For children (under 18)

approx.15€/month

  • Included: Fillings, treatment, preventive care
  • Included: Hygiene up to 100%, up to 105 €/year
  • Included: Removable braces and aligners up to 640 € per case
  • Included: Fixed braces up to 1,280 € per case
  • Included: Brace repairs up to 105 €/year

The exact premium depends on your age when the contract starts. Examples: an adult client as calculated — 24.23 €/month and 28.47 €/month (52.70 €/month in total); a child — 15.30 €/month. All amounts include 1% insurance tax. The premium may be indexed annually (e.g. for inflation) — you are notified in advance.

Limits grow with your contract.

So that the insurance isn't taken out “for one specific bill”, the annual limits are lower in the first years and rise step by step. From the fifth year, the full limit applies. After an accident, the full limit is available straight away, from the first year.

The maximum is 90% of the bill including the fund's share (100% for hygiene), within the annual limit.

When your cover starts.

Adults

No waiting period — cover from the day after the contract is signed.

Children, braces (Kieferregulierung)

8-month waiting period; paid only when medically necessary.

After an accident

No waiting period.

Adults, braces

Only if needed as a result of an accident.

What to know before you sign.

  • Treatment that was already medically necessary, recommended by a dentist or started when the insurance began.
  • Teeth already missing when the insurance begins (existing gaps) — a denture or implant for a tooth that is already missing is not paid for.
  • Cosmetic procedures without medical necessity (e.g. whitening).
  • Tooth extractions — except wisdom teeth, baby teeth and extractions directly related to insured prosthetics; replacement of wisdom teeth.
  • Anaesthesia beyond local anaesthesia, and alternative forms of anaesthesia.
  • Braces for adults unless related to an accident; for children, braces in the first 8 months (except after an accident).
  • Treatment resulting from alcohol, medication or drug abuse.
  • Accidents before the insurance began, even if the consequences are discovered later.
  • Accidents during professional or contact sports (e.g. boxing, karate, ice hockey, American football), official sports competitions, and during professional acrobatics, stunts, work with pyrotechnics or predatory animals.
Dental insurance is protection for the future. It's best to take it out while your teeth are healthy: then the insurance covers whatever you need later.

Not just one policy, but the best option for you.

We are a licensed insurance broker (GISA) and work with 15+ insurers. There are different models of dental insurance on the market — we choose the one that suits you:

Stand-alone dental insurance with no waiting period

Up to 90% of the bill, hygiene up to 100%, no waiting period for adults; limits grow over the years.

Stand-alone insurance with a fixed percentage

With a number of insurers, 60% (up to 3,000 €/year) or 80% (up to 4,000 €/year), with a waiting period of around 6 months.

Dental cover as a module of private health insurance

Only together with Sonderklasse, waiting period 3–8 months. Worthwhile if you are planning private health insurance anyway.

Frequently asked

Dental insurance — answers in a language you understand.

No. Dental insurance is taken out separately, without Sonderklasse or other packages.

Adults from the day after the contract is signed, with no waiting period. For children's braces — after 8 months. Bear in mind that lower annual limits apply in the first years (see the table).

No. Treatment that was already necessary, recommended or started when the insurance began is not covered. That's why it pays to take out the insurance in advance.

No, if the teeth were already missing when the contract began. The insurance pays for dental prosthetics for teeth lost after the insurance starts — within the annual limits.

Up to 900 €: the insurance pays the difference up to 90% of the bill, taking the fund's payment into account. Hygiene up to 100%.

Yes. The insurance reimburses the dentist's bill — from both a contracted dentist (Kassenzahnarzt) and a private one (Wahlzahnarzt) — within the percentages and limits.

Approx. 15 €/month. It covers treatment, preventive care (up to 105 €/year) and braces: removable up to 640 €, fixed up to 1,280 € per case, repairs up to 105 €/year. A waiting period of 8 months applies to braces.

It depends on each person's age. Example: two adults with treatment and prosthetics (around 52.70 €/month each) and a child (around 15.30 €/month). We will calculate the exact amount within 24 hours.

The premium may be indexed annually (e.g. for inflation). The insurer notifies you in advance; you can object — the premium then stays the same, but the cover is reduced accordingly.

You pay the dentist's bill, send it to the insurer (or to us — we'll help), and the insurance transfers the reimbursement. If the fund paid part of it, attach the fund's confirmation.

Local anaesthesia — yes. General anaesthesia and alternative forms of anaesthesia — no. Tooth extractions are not covered, except wisdom teeth, baby teeth and extractions related to insured prosthetics.

The best time to take care of your teeth — is before they hurt.

We look at what you and your family actually need — hygiene, implants, braces for your child — and compare the market. In your language.
