What a Haushaltsversicherung actually covers

The fine print that decides whether you get a payout after water damage from the neighbour upstairs.

EditorialWenexus Consulting · Insurance ·

Haushaltsversicherung seems straightforward: your property is insured, you can rest easy. The fine print says otherwise — and it is the fine print that determines whether you receive a payout or a rejection letter.

Water from above — the most common case

A classic scenario: the neighbour upstairs floods your flat. Two policies come into play at once — their Haftpflicht (liability for damage caused) and your Haushalt (contents coverage). The problem arises when the neighbour has no liability insurance at all — in that case, your own policy is the only protection for your belongings, and what exactly it covers becomes critical.

Elementarschäden — a separate item, not "self-evident"

Flooding, water ingress after heavy rain, groundwater pressure — a basic Haushalt policy often does not cover these. Elementarschadendeckung is a separate add-on, and without it, storm-related damage is not covered automatically.

Selbstbehalt changes the arithmetic

An excess (Selbstbehalt) of €150–300 means that for minor damage it is often simpler not to file a claim — the administrative effort and the risk of a premium increase frequently outweigh the payout. A policy is worth reading with one question in mind: "at what level of loss would I actually go to the insurer?"

Insurance is bought once, and reviewed only when it is already too late to change anything.

Fifteen minutes spent reading your policy once a year is a cheaper habit than discovering the limits of your coverage at the moment the water is already on the floor.
