Gewerbeschein in three days: a checklist

Documents, sequence, and the steps where things most often get stuck — briefly and in order.

EditorialWenexus Consulting · Business and entrepreneurship ·

Registering a Gewerbe in Vienna technically takes one visit. The difficulty lies not in the procedure itself but in being short of exactly one document — and having to come back a second time. The "three days" in the title is not the duration of the procedure but a buffer for that one missing document.

What to bring

A passport or residence permit with the right to self-employment. Meldezettel — confirmation of registered place of residence. For regulated Gewerbe (Handwerk, construction, cosmetics, hospitality, and around eighty other categories) — proof of qualification. For certain types of activity — a criminal record certificate, if you have been in Austria for fewer than five years.

If your activity falls under the free Gewerbe, no qualification documents are needed at all — in which case the entire package comes down to a passport, Meldezettel, and application form.

Where things most often get stuck

On proof of a qualification obtained abroad. A diploma alone is not automatic evidence: the Magistrat checks whether it corresponds to the Austrian professional profile. An advance enquiry to the Wirtschaftskammer helps here — they will advise which specific document will be accepted and whether a recognition procedure is required.

A second visit to the Magistrat is almost always caused by a document that could have been asked about by phone a week before the first visit.

What happens next

Your entry appears in GISA — the public trade register. SVS registers you automatically and sends the first invoice. Finanzamt awaits the Verf 24 questionnaire in order to issue a tax number. WKO membership also arises automatically — with a contribution that often becomes the second surprise after SVS.

A complete package means a Gewerbeschein on the same day. That is why it is worth spending an extra evening checking your documents: it costs less than a return trip and a week of waiting.
